Foie update: Chicago chefs officially thumbing their noses at the chicago ban, no citations have been given and the mayor calls the ban the silliest thing the council has ever passed.  (Thanks for the update, Claudia.)

    Fight the power, Chicago!

Civil Disobedience has worked in the past, so why not now? Go Chicago!!

  • This will be one of those obscure laws that people will forget about once it’s out of the media’s reach.

No one is going to want to deal with enforcing this. I’m sure officials feel they have better things to do with their time.

    Foieled again?!

Thanks Michael and Claudia. I’ve passed the link on to the Tribune article on to Alan Gerson, my New York City Council Member, who happens to be the guy who was last reported to still be considering proposing a foie gras ban in NYC. I’ve noted the reaction from chefs, restaurateurs, the public and the authorities in Chicago with emphasis on the fund raiser to support the opponent of the guy who proposed the Chicago ban.

  • I read this somewhere last week. This is awesome!

Well, Chicago restauranteurs are “va fangool”-ing the City Council, New Jersey has shelved plans for the ban (but could repropose it later), and even though Gerson says he might rethink it later, I think it’s been pretty well beaten into the ground here in fair Gotham. So arise, Chicago, arise! And way to go, Bux – sending the article along to Gerson will only serve to remind him how shaky the whole concept really is – and of the vociferous vocal opposition he got on it only a month ago. Nothing like a good “e-had” (e-jihad), I always say . . .

This, from an eGullet post this morning:

Chicago health inspectors paid a surprise visit to a previously warned River
North restaurant last week to catch it in the act of selling foie gras — only
to find that the banned liver delicacy was being given away.

Bin 36, 333 N. Dearborn St., managed to avoid a $250 ticket by offering foie
gras “as a complimentary sidebar to another dish on the menu. The menu made it
clear that they were giving it away as part of a larger offering,” said Health
    Department spokesman Tim Hadac.

“We turned around and came back … The ordinance prohibits the sale of foie
gras. It does not address giving it away. That would be up to the framers of the
law [to close the loophole],” Hadac said Tuesday.
