Does Obesity = Hunger
Hunger related problems now occurring in one of the nation’s capitals of obesity, South Bronx, from Sunday’s NYTimes. Expect more to come if the cheapest food remains the most harmful food available. ()
Cheever Bio Wins NBCC Award
Congrats to my dear friend Blake Bailey, whose
bio of John Cheever, won best bio of 2009 from the National Book Critics Circle on Thursday.
I mentioned this bio when it came out. It’s fabulous, highly recommended. Blake also wrote a bio of Richard Yates, which is every bit as good, if not better. I have no doubt his Charles Jackson bio (
which he talks about on the WSJ blog) will be the same, even if
Jackson is all but forgotten. ()
Michael Symon and I At Jo-Beth Legacy Thurs at 7
Michael Symon and I will be at
Joseph-Beth Booksellers at Legacy Thursday from 7 to 9. He no-doubt wants help flogging
that damned book of his. I’ll be out front selling out of my van. If it’s good enough for Bourdain, it’s good enough for me. ()
That’s pretty funny, mostly because it’s so scientific. I got all excited when I saw that because my parents have a Periodic Table of the Desserts hanging over their kitchen table, but it’s very different from the one you linked. Theirs is arranged in the same way, but has different desserts and pictures of each dessert. If I can find a picture of it I’ll definitely be back with a link.
Found it! It’s not terribly large, but it was the best shot I could find.

Me thinks your parents are most cool!
Ahh, I think what we see here is the difference between Kathryn’s parents’ chart being represented pictorially, rather than Gary Allen’s actual “period” table, showing the chemical “structure” of, say, brulee – but both are a riot! Thanks for the laugh, Bob and Kathryn!
Much as I love the periodic table — in all its incarnations — I cannot claim authorship of this one. I merely found it and passed on to Bob.
(…who passed it on to Grub Street, who passed it on to Slashfood, and then people started emailing me and saying “Hey! Guess where your table showed up!”)
Thank you for the kind words. “Really cool and also yucks” was what I was aiming for.
