Oh, the drama! The humanity!

Is it because I watch Next Food Network Star with a three month old girl on my lap that I find it increasingly compelling? Is it  because I’m looking through a pink tinted prism these days that I’m finding Bob Tuschman sympathetic ? I lost big money when my favorite, Paul, was–shockingly–dropped in the chopper and yet…I’m not bitter. Maybe it’s the excitement of seeing a resurgent Amy (who I had written off) become a clear front runner (and deservedly so). Or the curiously sweet spectacle of Rambo Junior, weeping into his pillow, crushed that his idol, Bobby Flay, loved him too little.  But, Goddamn if I’m not liking this fucking show. I find Tuschman’s comments refreshingly honest, acknowledging the gruesome reality of network realpolitik over cooking ability with unflinching candor–yet erring on the side of mercy for the devastated JAG. Which, by the way, paints the judges into a real corner:

JAG can’t be allowed win. His alleged problems remembering whether or not he’s a war hero–or whether he graduated from culinary school could be…controversial. In a bad way. He comes off as an unstable fantasist–already referring to himself in the third person (which is NEVER a good sign). And his overloading of the grill with chicken parts–causing (surprise!) smoke and flame–was something any backyard griller knows to avoid.

RORY got pissy with the judges when asked to demonstrate her "food expertise" on the fly. While Alton asking ANY of these candidates to explain "panko" or "capsicum" was akin to expecting your Golden Retriever to  suddenly start doing card tricks, the judges did NOT like her impertinence (as they clearly did not enjoy Paul’s incredulous "How the fuck should I know?" honesty.)

Which leaves AMY. That she didn’t seem to even WANT the job a couple a weeks ago makes her interesting to me. That she’s said her motivation is to provide  a better life for her family is startlingly frank and sympathetic. And she can cook.  And she was good on camera last week. While I have a hard time picturing her as the host of "America’s Top Ten Drive-Ins" or whatever Sunday morning ghetto slot they have in store for the winner, a working class Ina Garten might be a very good thing.  I’m rooting for her.

Whether it’s the butterfly mobiles dangling from my ceiling–the onset of early dementia, or long delayed side effects of past drug use drawing me to the tube Sunday nights, I’ll be watching.

    My faith in fn is not restored. There is only one adjective for the fn editors, cheesy, did I say cheesy? Did I say it loud enough? I think I should say it again, cheesy. I now must get some roughage as my brain is constipated again, as I sit waiting for something inspiring,(moving?) to appear on fn.Time to turn the cheese off. There’s the inspiration. Where’s Anthony anyway??

    So,who in the heck is the lame host of this finale? Couldn’t they have had someone who was on the show full time??

    Anyway, Amy won. She should have won and I am glad she did. I will watch the first one or two of her shows, and if they are any good, will continue.

    I watched the first one of what’s his name from last year, and… well, forget it.

    The best person won–what a surprise! I guess Rory’s money (or her wealthy dad’s money) couldn’t buy herself a win on this show either (she had an ad up at a popular website last week asking people to vote for her. Perhaps not technically (?) against the rules, but…seems unethical).

    Now I just hope FN will LET Amy do the show she wants–demystifying French cooking for the home cook. I think her “Gourmet Next Door” could be very good!

    All I can say is, “There is a God”. Thankfully the American public is smarter than the Food Network thinks it is. My faith in humanity is restored. Can’t wait to hear Tony’s remarks. Yay Amy!

    Wow, with Mark (Face Job) Somers as host, the finale has taken on a real small-time vibe. It’s as if they are trying to get out of this with the least mount of damage to the first tier FN stars. I’m waiting for the Sandra Lee cameo.

    I agree with you about Amy – she’s been my pick from the beginning as she’s been the only solid cook with a definate panache and confidence in the area of combining ingredients. Although she may lack confidence, she doesn’t lack confidence in her knowledge of food and this has been the case in every episode. I think she’s nice, too. So as her demo – I hope she wins as I would watch her and would believe in her expertise.

    I think one reason I would prefer Amy win over Rory/JAG is she didn’t scream at the top of her lungs every second she was on Rachael Ray’s show. That was out of control. Or, should I say, off the hook…

    The idea of the three finalists executing their own 10 minute show that they scripted would be phenomenal. I would like to see what they could bring to the table if it wasn’t all off the cuff. AND I wish Reggie had been the surprise contestant, only if Rory had been the one to go rather than Amy.

    As someone who does enjoy FN, I am offended that the producers think their demographic consists of illiterate couch potatoes. How is that not obnoxious? “Please refrain from using words with more than three syllables because the overweight soccer moms of America might flip the channel and watch Lifetime instead.” Give me an effing break.

(You know, the stylists move in like great whites on a chum line the minute a newly-minted celeb has been “crowned”.)     After reading upthread I noticed that people are doubting Amy’s French cooking school experience – She actually went to a reputable school. Not sure how well regarded it is but given that it was founded by the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry I’m sure it’s not just a fly-by-night institution! Also, I’m sure that the fact that it has English instruction makes it attractive to Americans. BTW, George Duran of FN went there.

    Uberangie, I’ve noticed that when posters’ comments are dominated by cattiness, it often takes away from the quality of their answers and they get derailed in their thinking – what could be a fantastic post becomes something else, which is why I suggested to others not to be catty. Upon retrospect I guess I wish I changed that comment to read “some cattiness is ok” and yeah, it’s pretty fun to read. You have a point. But I’ll “analyze this shit” all I want to – no one is forcing you to read all the comments, as far as I know. Ouch, ya got me. I am now being catty, and i love it. Meow!!!!!!!!!

    I don’t see why FN is so leery of using French words. Think of the possibilities for expansion. It’s like Steve Martin said, “Those French have a different word for everything!”

    And you know food is just a subset of everything.

  • *laughing*…. sorry I just read all the comments, and I think the last one said it best…it doesn’t really matter who wins. Whomever wins, will simply be plopped into the fluff lineup between the existing FN stars.. just like the Hearty-Party boyz, and Guy’s failed shows about gross Man-Cooking and diner exploration. Training is irrelevant, education is irrelevant – look at the majority of the FN “stars” It’s about appeal, marketing, and the ability to re-create the recipes. Plain and simple.

    If you watch the FN all day (sadly I did once) there is a magical little formula that has evolved over the years and now co-exists with all the hosts in almost every show. It started with what you could find in the “regular grocery store”, moved on to pairing every meal with a cocktail, and now it’s all about setting the table and favors… or wait.. didn’t Martha do that ? or was it Julia ? But who’s to say what came first – the chicken or the egg ?

    (p.s. I voted for Amy. as for Rory how much sugared grilled asparagus can one person eat?)

    Claudia, I’ll agree about Susie’s choice of clothing. I think she could stand to gain from a short course in what to wear on TV from Stacy London.

    I agree with Rob that you can’t really make a star. I think Tusch and Susie are using the “if they match up to the bullet points they win” strategy on the show, but the whole is always greater than its parts with these things. A contestant may have all the right qualities but it still won’t add up to that certain je ne sais quoi. I think they know that, but heck, the series sure is entertaining! It’s not who wins but how they got you to watch the show, now isn’t it?

    A better show would to have all of the contestants produce their own completey individual segment- do the whole enchilada: write, produce, star in, cook, promote, etc a complete, final product that could be judged against each other. At least that would be a fair basis for comparison, and would have some relation to the job they are actually competing for.

    I don’t know if this would be gripping enough TV, though. And the cross-promotional opportunities, to plug Ace of Cakes, Dinner: Impossible, and Iron Chef America would be lost! But it’s a show that I personally would rather watch. Why does every reality show have to embrace the by now completely boring formula of having a bunch of pompous and Platonic judges throw someone off the island? Enough, already. It’s boring by now.

    Worst NFNS moment- Duff Goldman is the guest, and contestant Tommy bubblingly exclaims, “He’s the bad boy of the Food Network!”…which in completly coincidentally how FN is trying to market him. Sheesh.

    Speaking of quality of food TV, one of my new favorites is After Hours with Daniel on the cable channel MOJO. I just saw the episode where Daniel and Eric Ripert made Tête de Veau, or calf’s head. Having never had the dish or seen it prepared, I watched in awe as they wrapped the entire head in cleesecloth, poached it in water with lots of vegetables, and then made a roulade of sorts out of everything but the eyes. Fascinating. And refreshing to see something like that on TV.

    Rob, your comment strikes me as the most compelling out of the 124 comments posted thus far– you make very strong points (my fave is the one about how no one really has any idea what makes a star!) and in the end, it doesn’t matter who wins, now does it?

    I personally think Susie looks attractive, preggers or no. I doubt her resume featuring a degree in marketing or whatever qualifies us a food expert, but whatever.

    The whole NFNS concept is obviously a complete goof, as everyone knows. No one really has any idea exactly what makes a star, if they did, there would be very few TV failures, and there are many. Which personality will appeal to America? A lot of people are good looking, have charisma, and can cook…but who can transmit charisma to an audience is a much more mysterious ability.

    Since it is a goof, the competition itself is just for laughs and cannot be taken seriously for an instant. Mario Batali would have been eliminated in round one because he didn’t know how to roll fondant on a wedding cake. Ray-Ray’s food knowledge would have been lacking, and she would have been gone. Emeril’s Waterloo would have been serving appetizers at the Nets’ game. It’s all so stupid. It’s like trying to decide who will be President of the United States by seeing which contestant can most quickly name all of the states or who has the shiniest shoes.

    Does it matters who wins? Maybe only if you’ve watched it, if you have a little attachment to one of the characters. I’m on Team Amy, but if Amy becomes a big star as a result (or a third Hearty Girl) depends on nothing that happened during this series.

    I’ll give Susie mommy-to-be-slack, too, because her weight is not the issue – believe me, she looks fine as a person. What I meant is she packs more pounds on her frame on camera by wearing cropped jackets (too short for her zaftig (curvy) bod), and the double-knitty/fringey/macrame-like schmatte things are just poor on-camera choices. Gail Simmons on Top Chef (also pregnant) managed much better.

    Amy should go on calling a bourride a bourride, a brandade a brandade, and a pissaladiere a pissaladiere – whatever. Those who know what they are, know. Those who don’t know will learn. Everybody wins.

    FN doesn’t really care about classic culinary training because their audience generally doesn’t (see Ray-Ray for all the proof you need). Is it really news to anyone that cable tv appeals to the novice, to the dumbed down, to the indifferent channel surfer?

    If you are a good cook with a lot of knowledge, I doubt if you are going to be spending a lot of time watching FN anyway. (How many chefs really watch “Unwrapped”?!) That leaves the rest of us, and while most of us are not morons, nor do we really give a fig how to properly chop an onion or about cross-contamination issues.

    I can’t understand also how people are surprised at how Alton Brown acted on NFNS…very few people in his audience actually know him personally, yet everyone seems to have an opinion on what he’s really like. On “Good Eats” and whatever else he’s on, he’s ACTING. Who knows if he is a nice guy in the first place?

  • By the way, how could you be surprised that Paul got axed? Aside from having no food knowledge, he’s way too faggy for FN. Same thing happend last year on the show, too. C’mon, Bourdain, I thought you were a sharp cookie!

    And what is the big deal, anyway, about saying something like, “Today we’re going to make cassoulet. A cassoulet is, basically _ _ _.”? That way, for those who don’t know what cassoulet is, they’re now in the loop, and those who do, don’t feel they’re being talked down to. Bourdain gave a cooking demonstration at SUNY (State University of NY) at Stony Brook on Long Island last October. He had some nervous 17 year-olds (who won a raffle and were selected to cook with him, later, I believe) and grannies in the audience, foodies and people who don’t have an idea what a Tarbais bean is. By the time he had whipped out his “stunt” duck leg (the pre-prepped one), everyone knew what cassoulet is, and how to make it. I don’t think people are as “dumb” or “ignorant” as the FN assumes, but even if some are lacking in exposure to a lot of cooking terms, a good TV cook, in demonstration, can always do a quick “footnote”/”aside” – just like Amy did. She didn’t turn me off at all, despite knowing what she was talking about bwefore she demonstrated it. What’s the big deal? Ms. Frumpy Fogelson needs to work through her Francophobia.

    And why is Susie wearing such schmattes (rags), anyway? A lot of double-knits and macrame-looking crap which so DOES NOT work on a woman who is a few pounds past lissome – especially on camera. She should talk about image, and how to “present” oneself! Hel-LO! The Carole King look does not work on a TV exec – especially one on camera!

  • As someone who presents cooking demonstrations throughout the Midwest, I can attest that people really are not morons and they like learning about various cooking techniques, and heaven forbid, a few French cooking terms. Whenever I drop one, they all write it down. My most popular classes are on foreign or ethnic foods – not only in attendance but also in requests for future demonstrations.

    I think that one of the reasons Amy sometimes came off as stilted in her presentations is because she was warned straight off that any mention of France or any French word made the surly Ms Fogelson recoil and perhaps nauseous (perhaps frightened by a Frenchman when she became pregnant and now her morning sickness is inexorably linked to French words). During the RayRay segment, they cut to Suzy pulling her head back and nearly gasping when Amy explained her dish – Eggs en Cocotte. Oh! the horror!

    It’s a shame that the foodnetwork is assuming that its viewers are morons that can barely open a can, but maybe it’s market forces at work here. Afterall, what sponsors are there for fresh ingredients? Next to none. We’re told all day long by advertisers that we NEED convenience foods, fast food, and huge quantities of food. There is suspicion about anyone who does things themselves – are they not well off? are they control freaks? are they suspiciously foreign? After all, Martha Stewart teaches us how to iron our linens, fold our napkins, and make our own jam – she’s evil, so that can’t be good!

    We shall see who gets the nod – and who wants to bet that if it’s Rory, she and Guy have a show together next year! How about “Canned Foods are Your Friend”? Oh wait, that’s Sandra Lee’s show!

    I swear I could hear the collective groan when JAG was selected over Amy. Even more so when, in a twist any follower of ‘reality tv’ could predict, he got canned, or rather, removed himself from the competition and Amy was brought back – surprise – NOT! That guy wins the William Shatner award for acting!! As for those pansies on the board, listening to his admission or shall we say, ‘confession’ ala the CHURCH OF FOOD NETWORK even though his cover was blown weeks ago, shaking their heads in some sort of admiration-slash-sympathy, what can I say? This show is either absolute horsesh*t or deserves an emmy! That being said, Rory or Amy have to be better than Guy Fieri. He is just too cool for himself. I like shows about diners and off-the-beaten-path eateries, but if he says something is “money” one more time, I’m going to stick my head in the oven.

  • In the beginning, whoa, how prophetic, the Food Network actually gave us people who could cook, who knew about food, who wanted us schmucks at home to not be afraid to cook decent food. Decent food: it is cheaper and easier to buy potatoes, wash, cook, peel and mash them than it is to buy,eat, and appreciate instant mashed potatoes. Why use Hamburger Helper when you have Mario or Bobby or Alton? So, in that vein, Amy gives us “gourmet” cuisine, because it’s French. What she hasn’t told us (and should), is that this is what French mothers teach their kids, and training as a professional means that you do it perfect every time, not that you don’t know how to do it in the first place. Amy does need to lose the phrase “fancy, schmancy” because it’s already way overdone. She needs to indicate that the home gourmet is everyday cooking by French moms, just as it was years ago in the US, one of the reasons that Southern cooking evokes such emotional responses to their own style of cooking. So, if the effort is cooking something new but easy, different but familiar, then Amy is the winner. If the effort is fast food at home, using restaurant quickies (sugar asparagus, which is why it appeals to non-cooks like Rachael Ray),then the vote is Rory. It’s like a decision between Giada/Rory (fake big boobs vs. real big boobs) and Sarah Moulton/Amy (petite, big-busted, Julia Child professional vs. flat-chested, knowledgeable, French, gourmet home cook. I’ll go for Amy, but I think that the Food Network will go for Rory.

    As for Bourdain and his daughter: read to her, read to her, read to her,… and forget the boob tube, so appropriatley named….

  • Had to add, I completly agree with some of the other posts…who does’t know how to grill a steak and roast potatoes….hello? If I am taking the time to watch FN, I might actually want to learn how to cook something.

    And what was with Alton, I was so, so dissappointed to see him look like such an a$$!

    Rory needs to lay to rest the “small-town Texas” thing. She has only lived in Texas for 2 years; she’s actually from New Jersey.

    Ths is Rory’s second go-around on reality tv. She was also a contestant on CMT’s Popularity Show two years ago where she finished second and was not well-liked. The show was filmed in Vega, TX where she fell in love with a local. So she sold her restaurant in New Jersey and moved to Vega, TX (population ~900).

    Here’s a snippet from the Popularity Show’s website:

    “Rory is a successful restauranteur from New Jersey. She grew up privileged, but has a foul-mouthed, tomboy side. Rory says most people consider her to be off-putting until they really get to know her. She feels the way to people’s hearts is through their stomachs; so cooking will be Rory’s strategy. If Rory wins the game, she wants to use the cash prize to open up another restaurant.”

    Oh please, oh please, let Amy win…

  • vote for Amy! I rarely watch ‘reality’ tv, or contest type shows, but as I love the food network and happen to catch the first episode of ‘The Next Food network Star’ I got hooked. The food network really lucked out when JAG ended up dropping out, he was a disaster waiting to happen. He bugged me from the first show. I actually yelled at the TV when he was chosen as a finalist over Amy. I can’t tell you how much I hope Amy wins! I am sorry Rory’s pitch doesn’t catch me at all….too busy to go to a restaurant…give me a break. On the hand I would look forward to Amy’s show. I would hope with a little guidance from marketing and ‘the experts’ at food network she could really blossom and help all us moms. She could really play to a untapped audience at food network. An actual, current day, mom. With the right input she could show that food can be fancy and fun, without being hard…and families (even kids) can and should eat more than mac and cheese and all the other family style stand bys. I get tired of cooking the same old things for my family and am sure others do too. Sure Rachel Ray does 30 minute meals and Sandra Lee does semi-homemade, but sorry, it just means more when the tips come from an actual mom, kwim? If you think about it, not one of food network’s major stars has young children (or if they do, they certainly don’t incorporate that into their dialoge). Keeping my fingers crossed for Amy! If you haven’t voted…go vote, it closes tomorrow am!

    The last thing FN should do is show us their “behind the scenes”. I mean, realizing that I have been suckered into watching programming that Susie and Bob have choosen is slightly horrifying. How much more condescending can Susie be when she describes the FN viewer? She thinks that Amy is pretentious because she used one French word while cooking baked eggs? Excuse moi but perhaps Susie should take a look in the mirror and see what a pretentious person looks like. It’s a wonder that I am able to understand a whole Everyday Italian episode with Giada using those big italian words like “parmesan” and “amaretti”.

    Ohhh… and the fake JAG resignation was simply ridiculous. FN is obviously sooooo jealous of Bravo’s Top Chef to so blatantly copy the format. I DISSSSagree w/TB though, TNFNS is not remotely as good.

    Seriously, her signature dish was steak smothered in butter and roasted potatoes (smothered in butter and bacon)!!! That’s appallingly bad, even for a “New FN” star.

    I’d like to see a show about French cooking, but that won’t happen on FN–not even if Amy wins. They’ll just turn her into another dumbed down “personality”, making generic, high-fat, low technique, food for the (supposedly) dumb home cook.

    P.S. We all don’t think Rory is really posting here, right? It doesn’t sound anything like her.

  • So when will Food Network’s management and marketing team fully utilize the experience they gained at Nickelodeon to take the plunge and start producing an animated cooking show? Just think, Cartoon Chef could walk, talk, cook and look exactly like they want and provide the plethora of branding opportunities they so desperately seek. At least it would end our misery of watching them comically turn one on-air talent after another into caricatures of their former selves.

    And after last night’s dramatic dwindling to the final two on the Next Food Network Star, I have come to the realization that this faux-reality show epitomizes what is wrong with the Food Network.

    Like the old phrase of “putting all of your eggs into one basket,” if you don’t make it on the Next Food Network Star, you’re sent packing into culinary oblivion. At least that is what this show’s contestants think as they tear-up over the fame and fortune they think they’ll miss if they don’t win this competition and its guaranteed entry through the Sugarcoated-Pearly-Gates of Food Network Heaven.

    Do these potential ‘stars’ (or the producers that are feeding into their quest for reality stardom) realize that there are thousands of professionals in the culinary industry accruing on-air time, writing credentials, calluses, burns and bruises (to body and pride) all across this country for the love of food? The Next Food Network Star should not be viewed as the starting point for a culinary career.

    The Food Network strives to be the pinnacle of culinary programming, co-marketing and cookbook publishing. When in reality, they’re simply skewing the bell curve for the rest of us who are trying to make it in this industry. And this bell curve isn’t off because the network is getting the highest grade in the class.

    Let’s keep it non-catty if we can (it’s sooooooo cathartic to vent in this forum but yes, i know it can be frustrating to have opposing views/opinions on certain topics, NON?….we don’t want to reflect poorly upon our kind host Ruhlman, or AB for that matter.

    I have to say, I was fervently hoping they’d bring REGGIE from NFNS season two on as the “surprise” new competitor. Remember Reggie? Very big, very black and very gay? Owned his own ‘lil place in L.A. and was giving Guy a run for his money? I I loved him. He didn’t have CIA training, but hell, he would have done a great job!

    Now that would have been cool!

    What KILLS me is how many dolts out there buy into the “Amy’s been to Paris, she’s a food expert” horse manure. With most laughably claiming she has MORE food knowledge than Rory.

    Newsflash;

    in 20 years of hiring European Chefs, I’d never heard of this “Cooking School” that Amy “attended classes” at. Did a quick poll of friends with a combined 200 years of experience and none of THEM had heard of it. Did a search of an online database and found ZERO professional Chefs listing that “Elite French School” on their resume. ZERO.

    And Amy’s “vast experience” consists of cooking for her Algerian hubby and his buddies.

    Rory GRADUATED from C.I.A. And attended J@W. And she’s a restauranteer.

    You people might not like Rory, but claiming Amy has more education and experience is just absurd.

    I’m not voting for Amy for several reasons. Amy has already had a meltdown and came within an inch of asking to be eliminated so that she could go home. Her food isn’t “snobby” because it’s better or more sophisticated but rather because SHE herself thinks French-France-Paris somehow donotes “better”. She even mentioned last night that going in to the contest she felt her strong suit was that she had been to Paris! Woop de Doo! NOT!

    I’m voting for Rory for several reasons. She seems like the most natural, down-to-earth and genuine. I think the FN could [but probably won't] capitalize on Rory being a Texan by doing some parts of the show on location. I’m hoping for the best for Rory!

    The show was shot entirely over a three-week period during Jan/Feb. No one had any idea about Jag’s misrepresentations until the Military Times article came out in June. And that’s the way it went down.

    Ryan, if that’s the case, fine, but FN still allowed the series to continue to air with Garcia on it after finding out. The article came out June 15 or so and the series was airing at that time. They only made a statement saying they were “investigating” the story, but I’m not so sure it was a good idea for them to continue airing the programs that came out after they found out, as Garcia was still depicted as a contestant who had a chance to win….Not sure I am sold on the wisdom of that, but I guess I don’t have all the facts.

    To Gary, yes I know when the Article came out in the Military Times, but the question is when was the competition filmed? How far into it did they find out? On the show last night FN said they found out about JAG’s deception “Several Months” after the competition was filmed. Several months? I find that hard to believe. Even if the series was filmed in the Spring (which it was judging by the weather, clothing and other clues) that was not “several months” ago.

    I definitely agree with Emily, who wrotethat JAG got coaching re: his melodramatic speech to the Judges Smarmy Leprechaun and Botoxmarblemouth. Yeah, baby, there is no way he could have said all that without some MEGACOACHING and I am sure he got paid handsomely for it.

    My theory about this show’s winner is this: They ALREADY KNOW who the winner is….and it’s Amy.

    The whole “let America vote” thing is a ruse. It’s a gut feeling that I have….

    I find it intriguing that “Rory” is posting amongst here in a manner that the oh-so-conservative FN Judges would never view as “reflecting well” on the almighty Food Network. Specifically, Rory’s opening remark
    “I LOVE this shit”. That makes me wonder….why is Rory writing in this way??? I feel bad about the personal attacks about her gums – she doesn’t deserve that, as she’s a beautiful woman…..but I was taken aback at her writing on the board and the way in which she chose to discuss her thoughts. Doesn’t it seem that the FN would prohibit that kind of thing until the winner was chosen??? Which makes me think the winner HAS BEEN chosen!!

    I’d love LOVE love LOVE love to hear any of your thoughts on my groovy conspiracy theory….I really enjoy the provocative and insightful posts here to date.

    Regarding the timeline – Jag’s lies were exposed in an article published by Military Times on June 15. FN has known about it for at least that long – more than a month.

    I wish I could learn the true timeline of when they found out about JAG’s lies. I’m willing to bet they knew about it at least a week or more before the final competition and they let him stay until the final three to increase the drama and save face as much as possible. Not that the others who were let go before him wouldn’t have been sent home, it just came down to a matter of when. That’s what I think, anyway. I was totally surprised when Paul was sent home and not JAG. I think they knew at that point about JAG and kept him around for dramatic purposes, and not to spoil the competition before it pretty much ended.

    I think they capitalized on what could have been a very negative “bad scene” and turned it into something juicy from a reality-TV standpoint. This would keep viewers interested in the final competition. Let’s face it, the ending would have been anticlimactic and negative if they just let him go when they really found out about it. Waiting until later made the tension higher. Interest in the show and JAG wasn’t soured during the competition. This way people will feel more inclined to align with one of the two finalists. FN probably thinks they saved the show from total disaster by doing this and they might be right.

    As entertaining as it is, to make observations about how Bourdain is overly lactating now, or that you could land a jet fighter on Rorys gums, and just what degree level of douche that JAG has been portrayed as.     It’s all about pleasing the advertisers, plain and simple. You’ll notice that they are letting the contracts run out on anyone and everyone who uses products without advertising support. The only exception to that is Aunt Sandy, who I hear is being let go, and that this LateenFaux Ingrid Hoffman is taking her place as a the shill for FN’s advertisers in the value-add programming block.

    And, if anyone was surprised about last night’s show or thought it was a twist, I have a bridge to sell you. They’ve been planning this since Day One. It makes “General Hospital” look like Shakespeare.

    Paul is the one who suffered most because Food Network failed to verify credentials. Had Jag not be in the race, Paul probably would have made the final three and, possibly, the final two.

    I would vote for Paul now if I could but since he was unfairly booted, my vote goes to Amy, the ‘I Quit! Gourmet Next Door’. Rory’s mega gums are all I see when she’s on the screen. They make me want to floss.

    How could they wish him luck on his way out? I’ll tell you why: they are just as guilty. They wanted ratings and fake patriotism so they just had to have a vet. In their cynical and slimy rush to get exploit our love for the military, they fell asleep at the wheel. I don’t feel sorry for the other contestants – I feel sorry for that PFC who really did serve in Afghanistan who didn’t get on the show.

    I liked Jag. He made a mistake with his resume, but he still served his country in the Marines (which is more than I have). I’m sorry to see him go.

    Rory will probably win, but how sad is that? Steak slathered with butter and roast potatoes…slathered with butter and bacon. ZZZzzzzz…

    And Amy’s French-influenced “home-cooking” was deemed too “snobby”. What is WRONG with FN? They are terrified of any genuine culinary training or anything other than generic “American” cookingc cooking (note the new pseudo-”Latin” Ingrid Hoffman with her Jiffy mix/tamale pie and jello shots).

    Rory has this thing locked up– she will win by the length of her boob. Sorry, Amy, but America has always discriminted against the flat-chested.

    The only other ones that can be interested in the Rory/Amy finale are dentists–Rory has a serious gum problem (she has too much gum where most people have face) and Amy has the most crooked mouth since anyone in an Dick Tracy comic strip. For those who admire teeth, it’s a truly horrifying choice.

    Give me a break. FN did background checks on every “next Food Network star” from the get go. The “twist” with Jag finally ‘fessing up about culinary school (No) and Afghanistan (No) and withdrawing himself, and Amy coming back after she’d been dismissed was all planned. If that’s all the drama that Food Network’s got, then they need to do fire some hacks and do a series called “The Next Food Network Writer.”

    The highlight of the “Iron Chef” challenge was watching Alton grow increasingly grumpy and obnoxious, as though he’s completely superior to any other opportunist on that network. He’s probably one of the better things on the network, sure, but whatever encouragement they’ve given him to act like he’s a toughguy around new recruits just backfires.

    Maybe he’s just tired of being strung around by the network? I imagine that being trotted out for wonderful shows like the Food Network Awards and All-Star Thanksgiving or whatever the hell that was must wear thin on him. He’s increasingly looking like the crotchety and out-of-place professor on campus with a worn corduroy coat and a bad combover. I guess that’s what the next food network star has to look forward to!

    OK, I cannot believe the editing on this show. I cannot understand how, on god’s green earth, after lavishing praise on Amy for how good she did PR-wise and what a disaster JAG was, further saying how unrefined JAG’s TV presence is but how Amy is someone poised and polished that “FN viewers could identify with”, they let Amy go instead of JAG? What was the rationale behind that decision and why not let us in on it? I was surprised last week too when he got through after the Iron Chef debacle; once again, nothing the judges said (that we the viewers got to see) provided any rationale to their decisions. The only reason I can think of that they kept pushing him through was because of the Latino factor. They’ve got a lot of white women with their own shows already, and whether he deserved it or not, Jag might have provided something different.

    I guess it’s a moot point now that he took himself out of the competition but it’s a shame that the FN execs didn’t oust him a long time ago to let some others move farther along in the competition. I don’t think any of these contestants deserves their own show, but I’m with Tony, I think Paul would have been an entertaining host. What we are left with is the “best” of a pretty pathetic selection to begin with, but for everyone’s sake, to spare us having to look at Rory’s gums, I hope Amy gets the next Sunday a.m. slot that none of us will watch, but at least we won’t mind seeing the ads for.

    By the way, has anyone else noticed the sudden recent promos for the new show Simply Delicioso? FN’s answer to the Latino image that they lost with Jag’s departure?

    I am watching the Jag breakdown as I type this …VOMIT! why did they even give him the chance to come in and be on tv again after all that crap…that was an on-air audition for Days of our Lives, he HAD to have had coaching to get his emotional drama crap performance down. ugh…I can only hope Amy will win. She is the only one who would actually hold my attention. This whole “backyard bistro” thing…I don’t get it. If Amy can teach me how to continue to care about cooking after I have kids who only want to eat chicken fingers, then I will be grateful.

Meanwhile, for all of you who have been following Tony’s “compare and contrast” observations between TNFNS and HK, he is guest blogging about Top Chef in place of Collichio on Bravo. I will refrain from commenting further about Rory’s post and simply say that I always enjoy Tony’s writing and insights, which are significantly more incisive and well-written than the much of the Bravo TC blog fare.

    I wish I had the chance, too … unfortunately, whoever is producing the current season of TNFNS has decided that making the show resemble its competition is more important than staying reasonably true to the original concept.

    Of course, maybe this just reflects the changes in FN as a whole – frankly, other than Alton Brown, I find the cooking shows on PBS far more interesting than just about anything on the current FN schedule.

    I’m still waiting for VH-1 to do a celebrity chef show with D-list stars … who needs FN and their “next big chef who’ll never actually appear in prime time,” when we could have a chef contest between Scott Baio, Emmanuel Lewis, MC Hammer, Cheryl Tiegs, LaToya Jackson, and the guy who played Screech? Now THAT would be a cookin’ show!

  • I’m just a layman cook here, but I agree that both shows have taken a slightly “cheesier” road this season. I can’t see to help loving Gordon Ramsey, however NFS – no one appeals to me. Sadly – I don’t see a lasting star on that show especially considering ‘Guy’s Big Bite’ (last season’s winner) actually Bites. P.s Rachel Ray isn’t so bad, in small doses, while cooking, and after 2 glasses of wine.

    Thank you both for another entertaining NFNS blog. Bourdain is always a fun read. ITA that Amy’s a good choice. At least she has training and, as Tuschman would say, “a culinary point of view”. She could bring something new and better to FN–even to the ghetto of Sunday a.m. FN. (So could Jag but…yes…no chance there).

    Love the softer, gentler Bourdain! One little baby has accomplished so much in only three months. Is it too much to hope that in, say, ten years the little girl has become a vegetarian and has shown Tony that it’s really not narrow-minded killjoys out to destroy the pleasure of those who enjoy good-tasting food?

    “And a child shall lead them”. One can only hope!!!
