Dan? Wow - I went to grad school with him. Terrific guy - glad to hear he's doing well (thanks for the link). Guess I have another book to add to the list (but not before Charcuterie - I swear!)

Thanks for the little trip down memory lane... now I have a craving for some grits and a Weeping Radish Ale.

"Make conversation with people you don't know." I think that's what you said at dinner, at least words to that effect. Words that hit home to a semi-anti-social, introverted guy from the Midwest who wound up finding a home in North Carolina. Life is a lot more fun when you take a genuine interest in others, ask them questions and listen intently to their stories.
Thanks for coming to Durham and for your graciousness and generosity of spirit.

So, Michael, this evening my husband and I will be fed by one of this seasons Next Iron Chef America contestants, Morou, at his Farrah Olivia restaurant -- or his designee. We are looking forward to it with anticipation. Yum, Yum.

That study makes an excellent point. I'm still working to override my own natural tendency to avoid the new and unfamiliar. Doing much better at it. My son, on the other hand, is a naturally adventurous sort - especially when it comes to cheeses. If it's cheese in any form, he'll give it a try. I think he gets it from his father's side of the family, since my husband was a Navy brat who ate mashed octopus as a wee thing in the Phillipines.

A few years ago I wanted to help with the processing of a butchered pig in a tiny village in Germany. The butcher arrived the next morning after hanging the disembowelled carcass overnight in the barnyard. He was carrying a sack of hot, crunchy breakfast rolls, and after grinding up a few lean pieces of meat he added onions and seasonings and made open sandwiches of the pork tartar with the Broetchen (rolls). I can still taste them.
Best breakfast I ever had.

bob, it certainly wasn't posted before the lunch. And again it is the nature of my travels that when i woke yesterday morning i had did not know that I'd be having lunch with heston blumenthal or ferran adria. i had never met heston. he's energetic and smart and articulate. i don't know about those ipods though! and ferran. can't tell you how frustrating it is to have such a language barrier. what he has been able to say through an interpreter suggests and thoughtfulness and intellect beyond what American media has been able to convey. and the lunch, melding traditional mexican preparations and haute cuisine by Rick Bayless and his staff was truly impressive.

and yes, those bugs last night. it obviously shows that the tribe has more in its arsenal than bats and balls!

Slaughtered prose does not taste good. I read way too much of it every day. Minor cases can be treated with good coffee and excellent chocolate
70%+. Major offenses require alcohol and more fine chocolate, and if necessary, pharmaceutical intervention.

Taking pictures while driving? What can I say. I take risks for my art... eerrrmm blog.
Blogging really can be isolating. It is nice to get a reminder that there are people behind the posts and pictures, and that there is more to them then the blog. Sometimes.

For those curious about locopops like myself:

"How to describe a locopop? Locopops are Mexican paletas. Cold, fruity or chocolatey or spicy. Fresh with ripe fruit. Just try one, trust me."

The mother ship won't come back for me until I've tried all human food, but since the Piedmont dinner was my first taste of headcheese and rillete, I'm in for a long stay on this planet. Great stuff, and reason enough to make the most of wherever you find yourself. Thanks for visiting Durham, Michael, and for saying "yes."

I suggested that one of the five things everyone should eat before they die is flesh from a recently slaughtered animal, ideally having witnessed the slaughter—I bet that gets cut.I was trying to make a point about knowing what you’re eating, all that’s involved in the food that we eat, but it didn’t come out right."

There's almost no way to make that come out right to an interviewer who may feel that he has to shield
an audience who has never killed and eaten anything other than a clam.

I really like the unedited feel of this post, it was raw and very exciting.

That "frozen concoction" was Locopops (http://www.ilovelocopops.com/), bub. Don't you forget it. Seriously great to see you and have that fabulous meal at Piedmont. And Bryan in the NYT, holy cow. I've eaten at his place and need to again before he graduates and becomes some sort of insufferable business process consultant.

I'll have to read Predictably Irrational. It looks like a great book, mining a rich vein that is only starting to be tapped, like Blink by Malcolm Gladwell.

Not sure how a Dukie ended up on a station called "WUNC." Irrational maybe, but not terribly predictable.

Your book tour will probably take you to plenty of places you don't want to go. Just remember how nice things turned out in Durham. (Figures you'd go to school in a town with ham in the name.)
